Soweto: Tourism, shopping and much more!

Soweto is a township of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. It is located in Gauteng (sharing Johannesburg’s subtropical highland climate) and is the largest black township of its kind in South Africa. The meaning of Soweto is short for South Western Townships, and it is made up of 32 different ones. These clusters all contribute to the vibrant mix of cultures and tribes living in Soweto. A population census from late 2020 states Soweto’s population to be about 1,695.

Soweto is a tourist attraction in itself thanks to its rich history. Today, it is visited by locals and international tourists for everything from adrenaline-rushing activities to savouring traditional cuisine. One of the more popular options for visitors is to walk down Vilakazi Street, Soweto’s most renowned street. It used to be home to former president Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmon Tutu and is also known for its public art displays, memorials, plus the Nelson Mandela House.

For musical performances and fashion shows, and everything in-between, head over to the Soweto Theatre. A range of productions, including musical performances by famous playwrights, are enjoyed here. Plus, the theatre’s striking design is also known as one of South Africa’s most beautiful architectural pieces.

Of course if you prefer your architecture to be shopping malls and centres, Soweto also has various options to consider...
