The origins of OK Express
The first OK store opened in Johannesburg in 1927 to overwhelming support from South Africans. For the next 40 years, over 100 OK stores were added to the country’s towns and cities’ Central Business Districts (CBD). By 1970, OK Bazaars was regarded as the South African shopper’s most trusted retail household brand.
That same decade, shopping malls began to spring up, forever changing the face of retailing in South Africa. Shoppers flocked to the new malls and retailers who cancelled their CBD leases followed suit – except OK, who continued offering various groceries, clothing, and home appliances from the CBDs, even though it affected business negatively.
In 1997, the remaining OK stores were sold to South Africa’s new Shoprite group for one Rand. Big operational changes were implemented and, only two years later, OK picked up its profit.
Today, the OK brand (including OK Express), impresses again with various stores and specials scattered across South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, and Swaziland.
The appeal of shopping at OK Express stores is enhanced further via the OK Loyalty Card. This enticing customer perk allows shoppers to earn cash, instead of points, on their grocery shopping and can be used at any participating OK store.
