American Swiss opened its doors with the very first shop located in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1896. The company's humble beginnings began with a Russian immigrant, Isaiah Hirschsohn who came to South Africa to make a living by selling his watches which were American and the other brand were Swiss, and it was since then that the name American Swiss was born. In the 1930's credit was introduced to aid customers during the Great Depression. After Isaiah's death the family joined the Foschini group in the 1950's. By 2010 the company already had 200 stores and in 2014, opened a store in Ghana.
