Before Robert Greenberg founded Skechers in 1992, he was CEO of L.A. Gear (which he also founded in 1978). And even though the latter company did operate successfully for a few years, a huge market loss in 1992 forced Robert and his son, Michael, out. However, as Robert discovered that there were no industry leaders focusing on men’s and women’s streetwear, this afforded him the ideal opportunity to try out a different niche.
Skechers first started operating in a California beach house with a mere dozen employees. The earliest products were utility-style boots and skate shoes, and the company’s very first shoe, the Cascades logger boot (which is still available for purchase today), became a shopping sensation in the 1990s.
From there, Skechers branched out into lifestyle- and performance footwear for men and women, eventually diversifying its range to include athletic-, casual-, and performance shoes for adults and children. Even the name Skechers refers to a child who finds it impossible to sit still – hence, the brand’s mission to continuously keep focusing on comfort, wearability, and style for its clients.
