The history of MINI
It was after the successful launch of the Fiat 500 in 1957 when the British Motor Corporation (BMC) decided to construct their own version of Italy’s newest car brand. And two years later, the first MINI, the Mark I, was released – a welcome alternative to the big, fuel-drinking designs that had been roaming the streets.
Interestingly, “MINI” was not the original title of the car, but instead the car was advertised early on using the name “SE7EN”. Later, it was decided to replace the name with the abbreviation for “minimus”, which means “the smallest” in Latin.
The first MINI unit was delivered in South Africa in August 1959, a mere four months after production started. The first MINI assembled on South African soil was completed on 21 December – and by close of business that year, no fewer than 35 MINIs had been sold.
What makes the brand unique to South Africans is the fact that a variety of interesting body combinations were produced locally, like the Wolseley 1000, the MINI K and a MINI MK3 – a hybrid of a Riley Elf and standard MINI.
